After setting up a schedule for your dissertation defense, it’s time to do some serious planning for your actual presentation.

First, set aside an appropriate amount of time for your preparations. Be sure to include contingencies and allowances for the rest of the tasks you have to do, and for delays. It helps to jot down important schedules to keep everything organized.

Visit your classmates, colleagues, and members of your committee. This way, you can ask about how you can properly defend a thesis. It also helps to observe actual dissertation defenses of other people, so that you can get acquainted with the whole process.

Do some changes with your plan. Your plan won’t be perfect the first time around, and if you learned something during your visitations, then go back to your drawing board and make changes to your plans. This is to ensure that when the defense day comes, you are very prepared and comfortable.

Prepare defense materials. Keep in mind that pictures still speak louder than words so, if you’re having a hard time with articulating your thoughts and ideas, rely on your trusty visual aids, which can come in charts, drawings, tables, quotations, etc. Colored pens, though as simple as they are, could also come in handy. Bring everything you need.

Practice, practice, practice. This is always the trick as with any presentation. Gather some of your friends and do “mock oral defenses”. Make them pretend as if they are the members of committee and have them come up with questions, so that you will be more prepared to handle questions when the real defense comes. Have them pitch in suggestions to your presentation.
