In making an effective outline for a Research Paper, some things have to be kept in mind:

Arrange the topics via subordination

The listed topics found on the outline must be arranged into topics, with each one having its own related subtopics. This can be done by the use of headings, and subheadings.

An outline is supposed to be the skeleton of the research paper: it provides a concrete idea of the structure and the makeup of the entire work. With this, the outline’s arrangement itself is very important. Subordination allows you to give the general discussions found in the paper, as well as the more specific subjects included within each one.

Divide accordingly

Each given heading on your research paper’s outline must be followed by 2 or more related subheadings.

Observe parallelism

Mere subordination will not give you a good outline to work with: other things to be observed include the actual content of the subjects. Just like with usual sentence construction and combination, there should be a parallel style that must be observed with the listed topics.

For example, if the heading is a noun, the next heading must be a noun as well. This ensures a better, more organized, and in effect, more concrete idea of the general subject.

Coordination

This is perhaps the most important thing to observe in terms of the heading-subheading. After the subject division and the parallel arrangement, now comes the crucial part: making sure the headings and the subheadings go together to form a good structure of their common subject.

The same goes with the relationship between headings: one’s degree of significance, as well as that of the actual information it gives, must always remain the same as that of the other.
